ANTIQUE BONBONNIÈRE

ENGLISH BONBONNIÈRE 1864-1930

Silver-plated metal bonbonnière with grooves detail

- It bears ‘WM H&S’ hallmark belongs to the firm of William Hutton & Sons, founded in 1800 by William Hutton in Birmingham. The firm moved to Sheffield in 1832, and was active and run by the Hutton family until 1930. This stamp dates the manufacture of the piece to between 1864 and 1930.

 

- The inscription ‘EPMB’ (Electro Plated Britannia Metal) which identifies silver-plated Britannia metal. This material was used in the UK and the USA and has a tin base composition (whereas nickel silver is an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel). It is also identified as ‘BP’ (Brittania Plate) or ‘BM’ (Brittania Metal).
