ANTIQUE TOAST RACKS

TOAST RACK XIV

Antique silver-plated toast rack from England.

The piece was manufactured by Robert Pringle & Sons (as indicated by the hallmark “R P & L”). Founded in 1835, the company was one of London’s most important silversmiths and watchmakers between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The inscription “EP” (Electro-plated) indicates that the piece is silver-plated.

The toast rack was invented in the late 18th century, during the Georgian era. Made of silver or silver-plated metal, they were designed with arched compartments to keep the slices separate and ensure they arrived at the table still crisp, without the steam softening them.
