BOROSILICATE GLASS
Borosilicate glass was originally used for pharmaceutical purposes. It was first marketed by the German chemist Otto Schott in 1893 under the name "Duran".
Two decades later, however, the American company American Corning Incorporated used it for kitchen products, marketed under the brand name "Pyrex". Later, the brand replaced borosilicate with soda-lime glass.
The glasses in our Ondarreta collection are made of borosilicate glass, a type of glass composed of silica and boron oxide. Durable and versatile, its low coefficient of thermal expansion makes it very resistant to extreme temperatures, and therefore suitable for use in microwaves and freezers.
BLOWN GLASS
The blown glass technique was developed on the Phoenician coast in the 1st century BC.
The pieces are made using a technique whereby bubbles are created in the molten glass by injecting air into a piece of material. Borosilicate glass and potassium glass are some of the most commonly used glasses in this technique.
